Edge Fishing Largemouths
This time of year, big bucketmouths are on my mind.
To best catch them, experts will advise you to venture past the shallows to target the deepest edges where most trophy sized largemouths will lurk in July and August. But throughout largemouth bass country, deep is not an option everywhere – especially the shallow mesotrophic and eutrophic lakes I frequent to that may only reach up to 15 feet at most. On these waters, the littoral zone could be the only lake habitat available, and the best there is.
Instead, I advise you to seek the shallows where plant cover and natural habitat is visible to the naked eye.
Here, the lake's littoral zone is the shallow, near-shore area where sunlight penetrates to the bottom, allowing rooted aquatic plants to grow and flourish. This zone is crucial for supporting diverse plant and animal life, acting as a habitat, food source, and protective shelter to all fish species. Aquatic vegetation and wood cover are necessary components of high-quality habitat for largemouths and supporting lake life in general.
