Signs of a Good Fishing Day This Spring
When’s the best time to fish in spring?
If you’re a die-hard and love to smallmouth bass fish in spring as much as I do, the best time to go is any time you can! However, there are obviously better and worse times for catching fish, and countless variables that must be taken into consideration if you want to know whether it’ll be a good day for fishing.
Fishing success comes with no guarantees, and so is northern Wisconsin’s spring weather. Whether it’s influenced by Canadian air or Lake Superior’s nearby presence, few other regions in the country have these weather systems and experience such a rapid transition from winter to summer like this place does.
May could be either cold or warm. It could begin with snowfall and ice cover still lingering on our lakes, with daily highs barely cracking the 40’s. Some walleye openers in years prior have enabled ice fishermen to get out on protected bays. Meanwhile, if the month shows any resemblance like May 2021 and 2024 were, ice out occurred in March those years and by the second week of May smallmouths had already begun spawning. These early ice out years never had spring according to our calendar.
