The Tokyo Rig Masterclass
The lives and mid-summer feeding patterns of largemouth bass revolves around dense and deep plant life. Aquatic plant species form the foundation of healthy and flourishing underwater ecosystems.
The most ideal largemouth bass habitats on eutrophic and mesotrophic lakes are vegetation based. The best lakes can contain deep weedlines and clumps of various plant species that commonly include green cabbage, milfoil, and coontail. Locations and depths will vary according to the lake’s water clarity, fertility, and the plant species dispersal throughout the lake and its growing preferences. Once these spots sprout and the edge establishes, they become a player for all the deep weedline fishing we’ll do for the remaining duration of the year.
Throughout the summer months largemouths congregate along these deep edges in search of food and cover. Several strategies will work to catch these precisely positioned fish, but the best weed mats can often be so dense that there are very few presentations that can cleanly and effectively penetrate through them, weed-free.
Under these settings, we’ve found the Tokyo Rig to be the best presentation for penetrating th
