What We’re Throwing in October
Hello to October, even though the warm water temperatures and delayed turnover process isn't indicative of it. Enduring cooling 60 to 45 degree water temperatures is a reality this month, and fall's progression will be rapid.
After turnover's completion, smallmouths slide deeper where they'll eventually settle for wintering and the tackle box closes. As these events simultaneously occur, my boat’s tackle selection lessens each week – and the majority of gear and tackle I’ve carried up to this point will no longer be needed.
Despite most lure selection dwindling down to the bare necessities of deep-divers, quick plungers, vertical hangers, bottom-huggers, and possibly even live bait rigs, I elect to continue working with a diverse assortment of smallmouth strategies as long as fish are still willing to feed and these strategies are reachable to them.
In pre-turnover, smallmouths and baitfish migrate back to the shallows (some, not all). Most fishing you should do until then is fishing fast, hitting the flats, and covering large expanses of water and acreage with horizontal search lures. Most days of the week, we seldom fish deeper than 10
