What We’re Throwing in September
Summer fishing is officially done, and a lot of great fishing is ahead of us. The upcoming coldfronts will further solidify early fall fishing patterns and get them going. Summer patterns for both smallmouths and largemouths might be still lingering, and could pop-up again during Indian Summer periods, but this will all change in the coming days.
Once the water temperatures finally dip into the upper/high 60's, we'll see changes and alterations to the tackle box and lure selection. This next week would be a good time to start swapping gear from your boats, so you get geared up for September into October.
From now till turnover - whenever it arrives in October - search baits and horizontal presentations are now the boat’s priority. Casting and coverage of high-productive lake regions is the game plan – flats, beaches, weed lines, and other shallow habitats. Only when coming across multiples of fish hanging atop structures or on bottom would ever necessitate having to slow down to drag a tube or football jig.
My boat finds all of its fish with search baits first.
We do the most damage with 3.8″ paddletials from a variety of brand
