Lakes to Fish and Avoid During Fall Turnover
It was a hot summer and thermoclines on deep lakes were noticeably established. Predictably, several lakes will undergo the turnover process this fall and the event might be drastic. Depending on cooling air and water temperatures, weather and wind-related factors and events, and the general timing of each combining, the lakes that stratified with a summer thermocline will flip and mix uniformly throughout at any point during the first few weeks of October.
During this transitional period anglers struggle to choose their lakes wisely or just simply being on the right fisheries.
Several decades ago, legendary Minocqua guide Tommy Zinda told this young boy to always avoid turnover, because by doing so you will simply catch more fish. And he was right - You can always fish ahead of it, or behind it. Hall of fame fishing advice that’s never been forgotten - I do my best to avoid turnover every October.
Turnover leads to difficult fishing conditions, and it’s a natural event whose powers we simply cannot control. Through many years of guiding and lake hopping, I’ve systemically identified my lake selection and calculated ways to combat these challenging times. T
