Late August to early September annually represents the early fall transition. This period is triggered by shorter days, cooler nights, frequent weather changes, and significant forage migrations. Biologically, the lakes undergo changes too with the onset of pre-turnover as surface temperatures are on the gradual decline, cool nights help trigger blooms, water clarity lessens, and plant die-off begins. The summer-to-fall transition can be very challenging, but understanding each of the seasonal triggers to good fishing will help you succeed.   TEMPERATURE As surface temperatures begin to cool, a large percentage of bass begin migrating back to shallower waters. Shallow flats and inside edges that were vacant from late July throughout August will teem with life again. Shallow power fishing patterns are often successful this time of year, as many bass are congregated shallow chasing baitfish.  TURNOVER Turnover does not occur here until the first two weeks of October, but the cycle starts long before, right around now.
